Geographical Data

Geographical data are geometrical data or map data, also geographical data represents objects within spatial structure. Vegetation and building, roads, wells are examples of geographical data.

GIS is very effecient to handle geographical objects, wheather these objects are linked to one location (static), or are moving (dynamic) they can be handled using GIS.

Geographical objects can be represented using three geometric types:

  1. Point
  2. Line
  3. Polygon
Some geographical objects has no spatial delimitation and they are represented as continuous surfaces, one example is temperature.

The main purpose of geographical data is to create maps.

What is GIS

GIS is a system to handle geographical data. IT is a tool GIS helps us to bridge the gap between scientific understanding of our environment and the management of resources. It helps us to bridge the technology with natural resources, also to bridge quantitative data with qualitative data.

GIS helps us to solve different kinds of problems easily through handling data in digital format rather than analog.
